Mad Hot Ballroom

"Listen to the rhythm. Don't be scared."
"Shall we dance?" -From Strictly Ballroom, 1992
The director Baz Luhrmann is one of my favorites. I absolutely love his Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge. I was watching his older film, Strictly Ballroom this past week after years of not seeing it. The story of the ugly duckling turned swan is set on the ballroom competition floors of Australia with bright lights, sparkles and Latin rhythms.

The Latin style of dance and beautiful dress brought to mind the Spring 2008 collection of John Galliano.
Beautiful colors, flamenco ruffles and flower accents.

The tiers of ruffles in Betsey Johnson's Spring 2002 dress resembles the authentic dress of the famous flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya. Carmen was from Barcelona and debuted on the Paris stage in 1929. She came to America in 1936 where she acted in several films.
The style of flamenco dancers was embodied in some of the Ralph Lauren designs from Spring 2008. Large flowers, ruffles and romance...
