Clean. Simple. Feminine. Chic. All these words describe the newest color obsession for designers...white. Many Spring 2011 collections opted for the neutrality of white that is anything but boring.

There was never a dull moment as Sarah Burton embraced white for her Spring Alexander McQueen collection. A naturalism meshed with Edwardian flair gave the collection a feminine level of drama.

Western luxe shines brightly at Ralph Lauren.

The basic foundation of white glows with metallic accents.

Texture adds further interest with lace, crotchet and embroidery-like detailing.

Clean minimalism is GAP's signature style, and it still holds true with pieces in white and tan.

Like GAP, Chloe embraced a minimalist style in her collection but also added a touch of romanticism with historically influenced lines. Silhouettes range from the full skirted dress, to body-conscious draping that is reminiscent of ballet dancers (with the added touch of slippers).

Chanel Spring 2011 Couture

Though Black Swan's cinematic debut has long since passed, fashion seems to still be enamored with the world of ballet. In shades of white, cream and blush, styles seem to float down the runways with feminine touches of ruffles, tulle, bows and beading.

This Spring's couture collection from Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, has a heavy dose of stage-worthy romance in its many shades of pink.

Feathers suggest a pas de deux from Swan Lake in John Galliano's Spring 2011 couture collection for Christian Dior.

Leaving the soft and sweet shades of blush, fashion takes a turn for the darkside with its contrasts in black and white.

Spring Fling

The iconic images of Marie Antoinette are often those of extreme beauty; dresses wider than doorways, hair that reaches the heavens, luxury beyond belief. But there was another side of the French Queen that I love to imagine, and that is her time spent at Le Petit Trianon. Marie Antoinette had a country home that included cottages and gardens. She could escape from court life and enter her pastoral environment where she could let her hair down and truly love. Away from the prying eyes of the courtiers at Versailles, Marie wore a scandalous white chemise dress, like in this 1781 painting, that was soft and simple. The scandal came from the lack of layers and coverage; not wearing her wide panniers and other normal undergarments made for a much more revealing garment.

The Chanel Spring 2010 collection seems to embody the softer side of Marie. Though not specifically pinpointing accurate details from her time period, there is a spirit and beauty that is easily related to life in the gardens at Le Petit Trianon.

Country life is embraced in a neutral, clean color palette with romantic details.

Simple pleasures abound like walks in the garden, roses blooming, butterflies fluttering and sunsets painting the night sky.

Away from court and the King, Marie could embrace her love for Axel.

More than just a fling, Axel stood by Marie until the very end. As the luxurious world of Versailles, balls, fabulous fashion and countryside retreats crumbled around Marie and her family with the dawn of the French Revolution, Axel worked to save his true love.

Loss of a Legend

Fashion has lost a legend. Lee Alexander, the designer for the Alexander McQueen label, took his life yesterday. It is a tragedy to learn that this talented artist will no longer be sharing his creations with us each season.

In honor of McQueen, I'd like to share some of my favorite looks from the designer. His creations ranged from exotic, to outlandish, theatrical to romantic and lovely. But no matter the style, the designs have always been inspirational.

Fashion meets Art: Elsa Schiaparelli

The Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli created wearable art with her cutting edge fashion. She entered the fashion scene with the encouragement of Paul Poiret and began by designing knitwear. She was the rival of Coco Chanel during the 1930s when they designed for women between the two world wars; but their styles allowed them to serve very different women--the risk taker versus the classicist.

Though an artist in her own right, Elsa Schiaparelli also collaborated with fine artists such as Salvador Dali. Through their collaborations, surrealist art qualities came alive as women wore shoe hats, skeleton dresses and much more.

These two famous designs showcase the surrealist quality. Surrealist art included tricks of the eye and the unexpected. Never before had fashion seen prints that included a large lobster.

More of the unexpected: a three dimensional dress of a skeleton and shoe as a hat.

Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2009 collection channelled the surrealist qualities of Elsa Schiaparelli. Elegant gloves suddenly become hats and and scarves. The key to it having the surrealist quality is the fact that the glove shape is completely obvious and unexpected.

The theme of time finds its way from the 1931 surrealist painting "The Persistence of Memory" by Dali, to the runway as worn by Karlie Kloss.

Elsa Schiaparelli introduced the concept of functional becoming beautiful. Rather than leave buttons plain, she began designing ornate buttons that resembled broaches.

Think pink...

Barbie and Legally Blonde's Elle were not the first to strut in shades of neon pink. In addition to her advances in design, Elsa suprised everyone with her use of "shocking pink." The color was found with her clothing and was the name of her perfume.

Obviously inspired by the shocking Schiaparelli, Dolce & Gabbana had models step out on the runways in this amazing color.

Sadly, after WWII Elsa Schiaparelli was unable to continue designing since the direction of the fashion world was changing so much. But her artistic spirit lives on with the help of modern designers like Dolce & Gabbana. So think pink when you get dressed tomorrow...

Snow is softly falling throughout Nashville. For the past two days we've received a steady dusting of snowflakes. As a rare winter gift for Nashville, I can't help but be in awe of the pure beauty. The white snow softly decorates the landscape, making the cold weather more bearable because of its sheer beauty.

Snow makes for a bon hiver (good winter). The perfect soundtrack: Bon Iver. I discovered this mellow, folk-ish artist last winter and now can't help but associate him with the season.

As with the landscape and in music, snow falls on the runways as we see shades of white in every fabric and style imaginable. Winter white can be fiercely fashionable, as with 3.1 Phillip Lim...

White can go from fiercely fashionable to fabulously feminine with the help of Elie Saab and images of the Nutcracker's snowflake ballerinas.

Powerfully Pretty

I recently started a new job that has kept me away from blogging more than I would like. But with the idea of corporate life on my mind, I couldn't help but think of the power suit that women often wear into the office.

To showcase power and position, women have used clothing for centuries to communicate their message. Medieval warrior Joan of Arc scandalously put on men's attire that included pants and armor as she led the king's army into battle. John Galliano's Fall 2006 collection for Dior takes a romanticized approach on Joan of Arc's powerful look.

Hundreds of years later, the powerful Queen Elizabeth used fashion as a platform to establish her royal authority in England. The strong shoulders, flattened chest (to mimic the broad, flat strength of a man) and dark colors could easily be seen in the Elizabethan era, as well as centuries later in the 1980s.

Strong shoulders continued to make appearance in fashion, as seen here in the photo of the 1890s woman. This was the time period that women began to gain freedom and indepence and so fashion had to communicate these advancements. Never before had a woman been able to do something as amazing as ride a bicycle.

The 1988 film Working Girl, starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver is the perfect example of a more modern approach to power dressing. The 1980s birthed the power suit as women climbed the corporate ladder alongside their male counterparts.

The 1980s made a comeback on the Fall 2009 runway with Marc Jacobs.

Military details always signal a powerful tone as they mimic the suits, camouflage and fatigues of America's soldiers.

The office is a battleground that requires proper attire for sure.

When talking about the frontlines, I can't help but mention our First Lady, wife to the Commander-in-Chief. Michelle Obama showed a modern sophistication with her 2009 Isabel Toledo suit.

The designer of Michelle's white inauguration ball gown, Jason Wu, offers us a modern interpretation of the power suit. I just love the two different materials used for the sleeves and jacket on the left.

Christmas at the Opry

A country Christmas isn't complete without a trip to the Grande Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. I love going to see the lights in the hotel atrium each year. I just went last night and wanted to share some of my favorite pictures.

The Opryland hotel is festively decorated in the indoor garden that includes high glass ceilings, waterfalls, a miniature river, bridges and plants of all kinds.

A focal point is the oversized Christmas tree decorated with large bows, balls and presents.

The architecture and lamplit paths make you almost forget that you're inside a hotel atrium.

Shops and restaurants like this beautiful building are located within the atrium.

A romantic gazebo twinkled with white lights and snowflakes.

A tree of white poinsettias...

with shiny presents underneath. So cute.

Red and white flowers decorate every inch of the atrium.

A winter wonderland of streaming lights, hot air balloons, flying teddy bears and more.

A giraffe plays a cello outside the hotel balconies.

A cafe is located on the ground floor of the atrium. I just love the strings of oversized Christmas lights that hang above the tables. Makes me think of a European sidewalk cafe.

Santa's elf overlooks a garden pond and the fish.

I love books, so I couldn't resist this ribbon wrapped bookstore with cafe tables. So cozy.

If you ever visit Nashville at Christmas, the Opry should definitely be on your list of things to do. It's a simple and sweet Christmas tradition.

Blue Christmas

Surely Elvis was not referring to fashion when singing the blues. But it's the perfect way to bring cool shades of style into the Christmas season. From a Target tree to a Tiffany's porcelain gift box, it all sings to the tune of a Blue Christmas.

Smitten with a Scarf

One of my favorite parts of this season is wearing fabulous scarves. Cool weather is warmed with a charming pashmina wrapped chicly around the neck. With every color from the rainbow available, it doesn't matter what you're wearing, there's always a perfect scarf to add as a complimentary color or one that stands on its own as a statement piece.

The beautiful Soft Orange Charlotte scarf in the picture is my newest acquisition thanks to the stylish blogger Cafe Fashionista and her partnered giveaway with The Shawl Shop. It has been about a week since Thanksgiving, but that's no reason to stop being thankful. Rather than limit my awareness of all that I have to be thankful for to a single day or time of year, I am embracing the concept of Thanksliving.

Everyday there is something to take notice of, appreciate and add to the list of blessings. So as I step forward with my new Thanksliving mentality, I want to begin with five things that may fall a bit outside of the traditional list. I am of course thankful for my family, friends, health, etc...but also these five wonderful things that affect all of us.

1. I am thankful that the Greeks not only provided an abundance of art and architectural advancements, but also introduced the classic garment that continues to thrive today...the toga. The style of draping, accentuating the body's natural beauty and simplicity of design remains relevant.

2. I am thankful that Queen Elizabeth championed the concept of Girl Power before the term even existed. She built an empire that surpassed any man's and did so while leading the way as the Queen of Fashion. All the women wanted her red locks, porcelain skin and high forehead (achieved through meticulous plucking). Her corseted form with a flattened chest (to mimic a man's broad, flat chest), neck ruff and layers of clothing helped underscore her "can't touch this" approach to royal position.

3. I am thankful that Madame Pompadour won over France's King Louis XV and became his mistress so she could give her gift of Rococo style to the world. The feminine decor of pastels, luscious fabrics, flying cherubs, ribbons and bows continues to inspire.

4. I am thankful that Coco Chanel broke the rules and freed women from the confines of pre-existing concepts in fashion. Boundaries were crossed as she encouraged a style using menswear inspiration, casual fabrics and costume jewelry.
5. I am thankful that fashion is a wearable art form that underscores history as designers return to the stories and people of the past as they create their collections.

The Harem's Closet

Fashion was revolutionized in the early 1900s by the French designer Paul Poiret. Women were freed from the confines of the corset with his draped garmets as they embraced a new style to match their changing role in society.
The draping and innovative shapes by Poiret possessed an eastern feel. Wearing Poiret, or channeling his style as Balenciaga did for Fall 2009, makes you feel as if you're stepping into a harem. Feathers, soft silks, turbans, lampshade tunics, rich furs and harem pants, it's all in the Poiret style book.

I love the peek-a-boo lace bra. Quite fitting in a harem I'm sure.

Denise Poiret, seen here at the NY Plaza Hotel in 1913, was the muse behind Poiret's designs.

Like Balenciaga, John Galliano found his inner Poiret for this Fall's Dior collection. Turbans, fur trims, hobble skirts that narrow at the knee, as well as many more elements sing to the tune of Poiret.

You can see the eastern influence in the styling of the lampshade tunic. It's a bit like a shortened kimono.

This pink dress is so sweet. The tassels at the waist make me think she grabbed the tie-backs from the harem's curtains to add this darling detail. Who knew pink and red could look this good together?

Girl in Hyacinth Blue

I just finished reading the novel Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. The ideas of art, beauty, relationships and history all come together in this story. The Dutch artist Vermeer, known for paintings such as Girl with the Pearl Earring, is at the center of the narrative with a fictional painting known as "Girl in Hyacinth Blue." We follow the lineage of the painting's owners back through history, learning how the painting has been passed along and end at the point of its inspiration.

Though the novel and painting are fictional, the story is captivating as the author explores ideas central to our concepts of beauty and love.

Inspired by the landscape of Amsterdam and history of Vermeer's time after reading this novel, I've turned to John Galliano's Spring 2009 Dior Couture collection to showcase the Cavalier period's beauty.

The collection is a bit Oliver Twist meets English sophisticate ready for tea.

Patchwork coats, plaid scarves and masculine inspired layers all underscore the spirit of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.

I love how the masculine fabrics and design of the vest and coat are softened by the petal-like scarf.

Muted lavenders, shades of champagne and luxurious details inspire dreams of retreating to a romantic cottage with a garden and tea for two.

The scarf is as delicate as a late blossom in an English garden. I love it paired with the sweater vest. Can't you just imagine a cozy retreat in a countryside cottage sipping tea and admiring the landscape?

to the offices of Mode with Ugly Betty...

to the pages of history...tights are everywhere!
The trend of tights varying in colors and textures has been around for the last couple of years; But it actually dates back centuries to the Late Gothic period.

In the Late Gothic period men and women donned their tights out of necessity as they travelled across the European landscape or lived among princesses in stone castles. More recently we've seen tights and knee highs on the silver screen with SJP in Sex and the City and also from a 90s favorite of mine, Clueless.

Tights have never gone out of style. Louis XIV, aka The Sun King and grandfather-in-law to Marie Antoinette, proudly wore red tights to showcase his favorite asset...his legs (he happened to also wear heels to emphasize their shape).

Colorful tights appeared in the 1960s Mod style with leggy model Twiggy and always seem to make an appearance on the Anna Sui runway.

I'm definitely a fan of tights for their practicality and the splash of color they can add to an outfit.

Here's to shopping for your perfect pair of tights.

Fred and Ginger. The names alone conjure images of soft waltzes, jumping jives and fabulous ballroom attire.

I'm watching the show So You Think You Can Dance, and couldn't help but think of dance royalty Fred and Ginger. It's always fun watching dance shows like this one and seeing the range of talent and dance genres. But I still come back to Fred and Ginger with their beauty, grace and style.

Ballroom always seems to have plenty of feathers and tuxedos.

Imagine a cozy October afternoon in a Parisian cafe leisurely drinking your coffee or tea and gazing at the vibrant Fall colors out the nearby window. C'est la vie thanks to Vogue and photographer Steven Meisel.
Paris of the 1920s and 30s comes to life with silk, lace, tulle veils, baubles and touches of fur and feathers.

Colorful tights are brightening the runways and sidewalks of a city near you this season. They're an easy go-to item to update a summer look for fall.

It may be cold outside, but that doesn't mean you can't get cozy in shades of winter white. Fur and oversized baubles are lovely accessory choices. I love how the clothing provides a white canvas for darker, more dramatic makeup and nail polish.

Life's a walk in the park with classic black pieces layered to create a chic statement.

Scent of a Woman: Chanel

I love looking at advertisements, particularly for perfume. A favorite campaign of mine is one from a few years back with Nicole Kidman for Chanel No. 5. The campaign was done after her starring role in Moulin Rouge, so there is a bit of the movie's spirit in the ads.

This pink dress is so beautiful billowing under the glittering lights of the city.

I loved that they made a mini-movie for the perfume. It's a 2-minute commercial that takes you into the beautiful world of Chanel.

King of Kitsch

I just read recently that artist Jeff Koons had a sculptural exhibit last fall at Versailles. I thought this was an amazing concept because of how his work interacts with the history of the location.

Koons is an artist that some critics say is a part of the modern movement, while others state he is simply kitschy (low-brow, bad taste). Rather than dismiss him as low-brow, I like to think of him of bringing kitsch into the fine art world. I find him so interesting since he has cultivated his persona, much like Andy Warhol did. Koons went as far as to hire an image consultant. It's this type of behavior that makes some critics believe he is simply a self-promoter without substance. But many art collectors disagree and are willing to pay up to $15 million for a piece of his work. Obviously he's doing something right.

The large scale sculptural work of Koons borders on a theatricality that I think would have pleased Louis XIV. Known as the Sun King, he embraced the dramatic in decor and dress. He wore his red heels to emphasize his shapely legs and was even known to dress in character costumes like that of Apollo.

The decadence of the sculpture mirrors the Baroque decor.

And the dauphine of drama can't be left out of the mix...Marie Antoinette. An assemblage of vacuums was placed in the room with royal portraits, including those of Marie Antoinette. When asked why vacuums were roomed with these women, Koons replied that vacuums are womb-like. Hmmm, interesting...

"Lobster" 2003

Koons says that his work does not have any hidden meanings. These bright, shiny and oversized sculptures are designed to mean whatever you perceive at first sight.

I think it's interesting to consider modern culture's desire for big and shiny things like houses, cars, jewelry and how the sculptures speak to that behavior. Though these behaviors may have changed, at least for a while, with the more frugalista mindset, the idea of shiny baubles and toys is still relevant.

The garden sculpture was designed with the elaborate Versailles gardens in mind.

Whether critics agree or not, I can't help but heart Jeff Koons.

Paris: The city of light, love...and Brigitte Bardot.

Actress and singer Brigitte Bardot remains the epitome of the French sex kitten. She became popular during the 1960s with films like And God Created Woman.

Time magazine called her "the princess of pout, the countess of come hither." I'd say this description is quite fitting with her luscious locks, kissy lips and sultry eyes.

Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 Couture collection called to mind the spirit and style of Brigitte. Mini skirts, knee-high boots, lingerie, some teased hair and pretty pouts.

Model Lara Stone brings the look of Brigitte to the runway with her curvacious figure, full lips and teased blonde hair. Leather boots and trench coats are reminiscent of Brigitte's sometimes bad girl reputation. The use of leather adds an edge to the femininity because the leather is sexy yet also dangerous; which is just like Brigitte. She didn't follow the rules in life and love, but instead made her own way with news headlines trailing behind her.

Whether 1960 or 2009, any sex kitten knows that sheer fabrics and lingerie are a must for the perfect come-hither look. Brigitte and Lara show these style choices off quite beautifully.

Nautical gets a bit naughty when worn by Brigitte.

Couture is the highest level of art in the fashion world. It involves innovative designs, high attention to detail and hours of work to create a one-of-a-kind couture piece. According to Vogue, only 200 women or so regularly buy couture. Despite the low sales figure, the art form continues because of its historic lineage and as a means of brand building. Couture's dream-worthy designs and runway productions are fantastic and inspire the imagination.

This series of photos was done for the October 2007 issue of Vogue, featuring model Raquel Zimmerman. Not only are the gowns amazingly beautiful, but so is the interior. The photos were taken in a historic Parisian hotel.

Model turned actress Tippi Hedren (Melanie Griffith's mother) starred in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic The Birds. Her blonde hair, elegance and style made her the perfect Hitchcock heroine.

Apparently her good looks did not go unnoticed by Hitchcock. He developed a deep fascination with Tippi but when she did not return his feelings, Hitchcock decided to let the birds do the talking for him. Instead of using mechanical birds during the attack scenes, Hitchcock used live birds that scratched up Tippi to the point that filming had to be postponed. Quite a naughty move by Mr. Hitchcock.

Dressed like an Empress

Before Carla Bruni, there was Empress Josephine. The wife of Napoleon Bonaparte was a French Fashionista before the term even existed. The empire dress, where the bodice ends just below the bust and the skirt falls from this seam, came from the time period of Josephine and continues to reign in fashion. Rumor has it that the dress may have been developed as a solution to Josephine's bulging belly during a pregnancy.

You may notice that many of the empire dresses have the feel of a Roman goddess, as a take on the toga. This is likely a result of Napoleon's emphasis on the Roman empire as he established the new French regime. Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2006

Napoleon came to power as a result of the revolution that sent royal heads rolling. The over-the-top lifestyle of Marie Antoinette and the French court helped instigate the civil unrest. Napoleon's military expertise helped him grasp the seat of power for himself and Josephine.

The atmosphere of war enters fashion with design details like brass buttons, military coats and armor-esque metal work.

For time away from court, Josephine purchased a retreat called Malmaison. Her daughter Hortense called it a "delicious spot." Though it was an expensive purchase, it apparently needed work. But Josephine was happy to update the home to make it into a cultural oasis.

I found this book recently in a thrift store and just finished reading it earlier this week. I absolutely loved it! It had a wonderful blend of adventure, romance and mystery against the historical backdrop of Napoleon's French empire.

I have to admit that what originally drew me to the book was its cover. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I do. I love searching for books in thrift and secondhand stores to see what books I can find. And if I'm not familiar with the title or author I do find that I make decisions based on the cover. Isn't the cover for the Pink Carnation beautiful?

Operatic elegance combines with royal details in the Fall 2009 collection of D&G by Dolce and Gabbana.

Corseted bodices, rich brocades, ermine capes...these design choices all reference the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603).

The Elizabeth elements combined with the romance of the clothing makes Shakespeare a stageworthy reference point; Even moreso since Elizabeth was an avid supporter of theatre and Shakespeare's work.
The 1998 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes highlights the Elizabethan references in the D&G collection with neck ruffs, lush fabrics and sheer romance.

The fabric of these beautiful dresses mirror the curtain and color scheme of the Paris Opera.

Soft satins, textured velvets, lace, ribbons and tassels all make for romantic designs.

The tufting of the fabric creates a plush appearance that reminds me of a luxurious opera house seat.

Wearable art: The fabric of this design resembles the ceiling of the ornately beautiful foyer in the Paris Opera.

Can't you imagine floating down the grand staircase in this elegant gown? Prince Charming would of course be waiting for you at the base of the stairs, ready to escort you to the opera.

The 2004 film starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum brought the 1909 story of the Phantom and his love to the silver screen. Interestingly, the story was inspired by the real-life falling of the chandelier that tragically killed one person in 1896.

The Paris Opera was built for the Emperor and Empress Eugenie in the 1860s in the Beaux Art style. The marble friezes, statues and luminescent chandeliers provide the perfect setting for the classic story of the Phantom as well as the D&G collection.

The ads also reference Coco's original style with details like the layered neck ruff and wrist details on the black suit.

The epitome of Chanel? Sass, class and the best LBD.

Like Chanel, Holly Golightly wears layers of pearls.

Along with good looks and great clothes, every woman must smell her best, including Marilyn Monroe.

The LBD, sophisticated coiffe, pearls and classic pumps are right in line with the Chanel look.

Model Agyness Deyn has been spotted!

That's right, this Brit beauty was seen wearing one my new favorite things, a Swatch watch. You may remember a previous "Fashion meets Art" post talking about Matthew Langille's collaboration with Swatch to create 3 fun designs for the brand; well that's what Agyness was seen wearing last Friday of Fashion Week.

What I love about Agyness is her no rules approach to fashion. She might wear a cartoon watch like those from the Swatch line, some thrifted clothes or maybe a high-end designer piece. She wears what she wants, when she wants. That spirit is definitely something to be admired.
Whether on the cover of international editions of Vogue or as the face of brand campaigns, Agyness always brings personality.

You never know what Agyness is going to wear. It can range from over-the-top to 80s to pure class. Who knows what will be next?

Her tendency to wear vintage pieces shows us all that style is what you make it. You don't need a label to look good...though she probably has many labels as a top model. But I like to think that it's her thrift and vintage pieces put together in new ways that make her look so fun and unique.

Her lanky legs, blonde pixie cut and British charm remind me of Twiggy.

I love Anna Sui. She has a way of designing that balances beauty with an edge. There always seems to be a hint of attitude in her clothing that adds another level of interest to pretty prints, flowing fabrics and layers of accessories.

Her boho charm seems to be founded in the brand's connection to music, art and history. Though Anna Sui's fabrics and designs are quite recognizable, each season showcases a variety of influences.

I think Target's designer collaborations, with Alexander McQueen and now Anna Sui, are genius. Fashion we love from the runways has been made affordable and available to all fashionistas no matter their budget. And to top this collaboration off, Target has been doing an amazing ad campaign pairing Anna Sui designs with Gossip Girl. I love it!

So in honor of Anna Sui's line at Target, here's a look at her runway inspirations and some of my favorite Anna Sui looks.

Paul Poiret freed women from corsets and embraced a new style that used Orientalism, flowing fabrics and decadent prints.

This is one of my favorite collections. It's frilly and edgy all at the same time. Can you imagine Marie Antoinette at a New York Dolls concert? Apparently Anna can. Love it!

Medieval romance makes an appearance with the dark color palette and connections to Pre-Raphaelite art.

And now a look at the new collection inspired by the bad and the beautiful Gossip Girl.

Fashion meets Art: Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman became famous after her Untitled Film Series (late 70s-80). On the surface the photos seem to be self-portraits, but are more like characters from our culture.

These stereotypes and cliches in the photos are women easily found in B-movies or film noir. You might get the feeling that you're looking at a publicity photo, or a moment captured at home of a famous starlet. Cliches include the blonde bombshell, the sex kitten, the traveller, etc.

From lingerie to Hitchcock. The above Film Still is of Cindy Sherman's version of the blonde bombshell when she first started the series.

I thought the photo below had the feeling of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. The set reminded me of the hotel room in the film.

I find this series one of Cindy Sherman's most interesting...perhaps because it connects to the idea of how women are portrayed in movies and the messages we read through imagery.

Dior's Rococo Romance

The Rococo style came out of 18th century Europe. It began as a decorating movement that emphasized curving lines and ornamentation, but it soon crossed over into fashion and became a way of life. Embraced by fashionistas like Madame de Pompadour, Rococo affected architecture, decor, fashion and art.

The look was very feminine with soft lines, pastel colors and high levels of ornamentation. Romance was abundant with Cupid flying about (you'll see him in many paintings in this post). The rich embraced leisure and wore beautiful clothes in their daily masquerade of love and affection.
John Galliano's Fall 2007 Dior Couture collection brings to mind many of the ideals from the Rococo period. Though elements also reference the Victorian era and the 1947 New Look from Dior, the Rococo spirit is very clear.

Feminine. Decorative. Luxurious. Pastel. Romantic. Whimsical.

These interiors are examples of where the rich and beautiful lived their daily lives. I think it's interesting to see how the furniture and decor complement the gowns in the paintings. The elements work so wonderfully together.

I love seeing where history and modernity meet. The 1700s Madame Pompadour gown seems to have influenced John Galliano's design in color, texture and detail. Though not identical, they do share a resemblence. And then you can see the connection to Glenn Closes' gown in the picture below from the film Dangerous Liasons. Similar colors, use of trims and bows. If you want to see beautiful Rococo fashion and decor, definitely watch the movie.

The love of leisure and flirtations is picture perfect in Francois de Troy's Declaration of Love from 1731.

Romance could just as easily take place outdoors as architectural details entered the garden with staircases and statues (like in the painting above). Flowers and hedge designs provided a beautiful backdrop.

Cupid quietly lifts his finger to his lips because this little rendezvous is surely a secret.

Elle est Belle

This is a beautiful series of photos done for Vogue in 2005 by the talented photographer Annie Leibovitz. Drew Barrymore poses as Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

Color guides the end of the story as Belle finds herself falling in love with the beast. Though not originally photographed to be in this order for Vogue, I believe the photos tell a wonderful story through the gown choices as Belle returns to the beast in the garden of roses and later joins him for supper in their ornate dining room. Soft shades of pink progress to a deep red as her affections grow into a love that will last forever.

The story of Beauty and the Beast has been told for over a hundred years. I loved seeing these old illustrations from children's books and comparing the depictions of Belle and her gown to the more familiar Disney version.

Though many versions I saw had Belle wearing simple gowns of blue in Medieval-esque designs, this 1870 drawing shoes the famous shade of gold that continues to live on through Disney.

I love the dance scene between Belle and the beast. It's so beautiful...the dress, the music, the stars. I found this photo from the San Francisco ballet. To see the entire story told through dance would be amazing I'm sure.

And of course every fairytale ends happily ever after. A real life castle to live out this storybook romance would be Germany's Neuschwanstein. This castle was built in the late 1800s to resemble the gothic designs of centuries past. The rich colors in the bedroom and ornate chandeliers are the perfect setting for Belle and her prince.

A New Kind of Love

The 1963 A New Kind of Love with Paul Newman and real-life wife Joanne Woodward is a beautiful movie. The City of Lights becomes the City of Love as the dreamy Steve Sherman (aka Paul Newman) finds himself falling for the ugly duckling turned swan, Sam (Joanne Woodward). Though there are cheesy parts, the movie is worth watching for the clothing alone.
For this vintage love story imagine the Eiffel Tower, romantic meals under the starry sky and fabulous fashion.

The perfect collection for dreaming about love in Paris is John Galliano's Spring 2008 Dior Couture Collection. His designs have clear connections to the 1960s from the line of the skirts, shape of the jackets and spirit of the women.

Lush fabrics. Dazzling details. Rich colors. Whimsical beauty.

Don't you just love the leopard printed furniture in the 1960s picture? It's beauty with an attitude that's not afraid to make a statement.

If you had to spend your life in a shoe, what kind would it be?

Perhaps it would date back to the days of Madame Pompadour and the Rococo era with silk linings and pastel colors...

Or maybe the shoe would simply be inspired by the past, like this fabulous heel by Christian Louboutin that references the Neoclassical fashionista Marie Antoinette.
The shoe could have a playful humor and sex appeal with lace and ribbons like these designed by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton that are reminiscent of the Moulin Rouge CanCan dancers.

If you wish to aim for the old world beauty of Asia, these small slippers designed for bound feet would be the perfect choice.

If you wish for a slipper with a bit more room, you might enjoy living in a ballet inspired flat by Tory Burch.

I've been on a road trip--the cause of my delayed posting--and as I headed west towards Texas I couldn't help but think of America's cowboy heritage. Who better to embody the American spirit than Ralph Lauren? His collections are often infused with touches of western wear with details like turquoise, silver and Native American prints.Ralph Lauren even showcases the style in his own wardrobe, as seen here in chaps with a touch of fringe.
